Catalytic converters are designed to last for the life of the vehicle. So why do they fail?
The most common catalytic converter failure is catalyst poisoning which occurs when the converter is exposed to emissions that coat the working surfaces of the converter, enveloping the catalyst to the point it cannot efficiently treat the exhaust. This type of failure accounts for about 90% of the catalytic converters that have failed and can be regenerated back to operating condition.

Most New OEM converters properly engineered to your vehicle specifications depending on market value contain hundreds of dollars of Platinum Group Metals, and that is just the cost of the metals, they still have to manufacture the converter! How can an aftermarket company make a converter that would need to have that amount of PGM in it, but then sell it for less than the cost of the required metals? They Can't!
Basically, the cheaper the cat the less precious metals used. It should be noted that there are some automobile makes that are very precise when it comes to catalytic converters and the logic that the PCM uses to monitor them. Just because the parts guy says it will work doesn't mean that it will. The reason is that the engineering and programming of the vehicle was done with a high quality catalyst and it can't be replaced with a low quality catalyst . There are also different kinds of catalysts, some makes will allow for a cheaper heavy grade catalyst while others simply will not, Toyotas, some GM & Subarus are a couple of the vehicles that most known for this. Also vehicles with CALIFORNIA EMISSIONS require OEM grade or CARB certified catalysts to keep the check engine light off and won't tolerate an aftermarket catalyst , no matter how expensive.
Regenerated Catalytic Converters - This is the best of everything. You will have the function of an OEM converter, but the cost will be significantly less then new, and the best part is any converter that is regenerated by CatRegeneration is guaranteed to pass state inspection.
